The Wolf Pack is a new Outreach Ministry at St. William’s and is named in honor of St. William and his hard working wolf. Please see the story noted below.
This Outreach Ministry will allow parishioners to join together as we seek out and participate in various volunteer opportunities in our community. We hope to do something monthly, if possible. Not only will this Outreach Ministry allow you to help those in need in the North County, but it will also give you the chance to meet more of your fellow parishioners as you volunteer together, in addition to meeting other new people in the area.
The Wolf Pack process will consist of sending out an email (to those who have given their email address to this group) telling you of an upcoming Volunteer opportunity in the community. This email will also include our Meet Up spot so we can all be together for the work, if possible. If you plan to attend, let us know by email. If not, no response is necessary. Some months you may join us and others you may not. It’s up to you. Just know that by joining this group, you have the chance to be a part of some great things happening in our community.
Why is St. William always depicted with a wolf?
Saint William retired to Monte Vergiliano (today known as Monte Vergine, named for Our Blessed Mother) and became a hermit. There, he spent his days in prayer, fasting, and contemplation of the Lord. Especially devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary, he began construction of a church in her honor, mining the rocks from the mountain by hand with the assistance of a lone donkey. As holy legend tells us, one evening, the donkey was killed and eaten by a wolf. Saint William called the wolf to him, ordering it to take the donkey’s place. The wolf, bowing in respect and realizing that it had interrupted the work of God, immediately took up the task of dragging rocks from the quarry. The faithful who continue to travel on pilgrimage to Monte Vergine report that the wolf is still spotted today, visible to those who call upon the name of the Blessed Virgin.
